Tread Depth Law
Current tread depth legislation requires that car tyres must have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread in a continuous band throughout the central ¾ of the tread width and over the whole circumference of the tyre. However, despite the law, it is universally recognised in the tyre industry that the legal limit is wholly insufficient to protect drivers in adverse driving conditions.

Trying to measure 1.6mm is quite difficult so another way of checking is to look at the tread itself. At about six or seven points around the tyre you will see a thin raised rubber ridge going across the base of the tread. These indicators or “tie-bars” and are actually set at 1.6mm, so if the tread blocks are worn to the same height as the tie-bars you know the tyre is on the legal limit and should be changed.

Drivers are therefore recommended to consider replacing their tyres when the tread depth reaches 3mm. It is also strongly recommended that new tyres are fitted as pairs or sets of four.
